Mumbai: India is celebrating the 70 golden years of independence this 15 August. This historic day ignites patriotism in every Indian, who celebrates the day with much fervour.
Indian cinema too has contributed immensely to glorify the contributions of people who have moved mountains to achieve independence. A number of films with patriotism as its theme too have inspired audiences and rekindled nationalism among people from across all age groups.
And when it comes to Hindi Cinema, the Khans rule the roost. Here’s taking a look at some of the films which have had Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan flaunt their patriotic sides:
As ACP Ajay Singh Rathod in ‘Sarfarosh’ Aamir left one and all surprised with his jaw-dropping performance, way back in 1999. Soon, he went on to portray Bhuvan (in Lagaan) from a small village named Champaner in pre-independent India, where his love for his soil took centre stage and his determination overpowered the British. And then came ‘Rang De Basanti’ a new age film that inspired the youth to embrace the patriotic zest. As DJ/ Chandrashekhar Azad, Aamir made a million hearts skip a beat. And as Mangal Pandey, Aamir retold the story of Sepoy Mutiny 1857.
Salman, who enthralled the audiences worldwide recently as ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, played a soldier in ‘Heroes’, who sacrificed his life for the sake of his country. More recently, Salman yet again essayed an army man (shown as an ex-army man) in ‘Jai Ho’, where he is seen fighting the corrupt and the unjust.
Shah Rukh Khan
As Kabir Khan in ‘Chak De! India’, Shah Rukh Khan left millions in awe. The maturity with which he dealt with the character spoke volumes about his commitment towards it. As a Hockey coach, SRK draped the spirit of patriotism with much passion. And prior to ‘Chak De! India’, SRK played a Non Resident Indian in ‘Swades’, who feels guilty of not having done much for his birthplace. The film revolves round the transition his life sees from being a NASA employee to a common Indian.
Saif Ali Khan
Saif essayed the role of Capt. Anuj Nayyar in JP Dutta’s ‘LOC Kargil’. Capt. Anuj Nayyar belonged to the 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, who lost his life during operations in the Kargil War in 1999. The Nawab of Pataudi also essayed the role of a spy in ‘Agent Vinod’. Soon, Saif, will be seen in ‘Phantom’, a film which will instil patriotism.
