London: Hollywood actress Meryl Streep says playing the lead role in her new film about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher left her with great admiration for the Iron Lady.
The 62-year-old`s upcoming film `The Iron Lady` about Thatcher is narrated through a series of flashbacks, reported Daily Mirror.
"The more I learned, the more my view of her changed. Wherever you stand on her policies, the scale of her influence was extraordinary. It`s really humbling to consider that she was at 10 Downing Street for 10-and-a-half years. I admire that achievement. I stand in awe of it," Streep said.
Former colleagues of Thatcher, including Tory grandee Lord Tebbit, have attacked the film as "left wing fantasy" for depicting her dementia.
Streep also said Thatcher is unlikely to see it, but added, "If she did, I hope she would see an empathetic attempt to understand her place in history."
