New Delhi: Neha Dhupia, who will be seen in the role of Eva Braun, Hitler`s girlfriend in upcoming film `Gandhi To Hitler`, says portraying the historical character was difficult and emotionally exhausting.
"There are some characters that I have played in the past which have really made me feel attached to them. After Madhu (Ek Chalis Ki Last Local) and Sonam (Mithya), Eva (Gandhi To Hitler) is one such character," Neha told reporters.
The 30-year-old actress, whose last five releases `Phas Gaye Re Obama`, `Action Replayy`, `Raat Gayi, Baat Gayi?`, `De Dana Dan` and `Paying Guests` have been comedies, is happy to do an intense role after a long time.
In Rakesh Ranjan Kumar directed `Gandhi To Hitler`, Neha`s character has a significant role to play as Eva was the only woman who was closest to Hitler, especially in the days leading to his downfall.
"Eva was someone who was quite flamboyant with Hitler`s soldiers. But behind that exterior of being happy and charming, there was certain sadness and romanticism in her. I have become mellower than ever after playing her," the actress said.
Since the film is a biopic and tells a real life tale based on notes available in history books, even Neha did her research before putting on the garb of Eva Braun.
"It isn`t easy to step into the shoes of such historical personality. I had to go through history, pick up whatever images or footage that were available of her and try to get an idea of what she must have been in real life.
"I had to work hard as an actress and make my own version of the series of incidents that would have taken place then. I tried to bring myself as closer as possible to Eva before it actually started making sense. Now the final verdict is with the audience," Neha said.
Anupam Kher was originally set to play Hitler in the movie but the actor decided to opt out following protests from his fans. His part finally went to Raghubir Yadav.
Also starring Aman Verma, `Gandhi To Hitler` releases all over on July 29.
