Mumbai: Rajesh Khanna’s health started deteriorating ever since the actor was diagnosed with cancer. The actor was suffering from the deadly disease for about a year and a half and it was son-in-law Akshay Kumar who brought the family together to be by Kaka’s side during his final days.
Having lost his own father to cancer few years back, Akshay wanted his father-in-law to be well taken care of. The superstar himself wanted to live it up till the end and his family, thanks to Akshay, ensured he did.
The man who was known to be a recluse, used to meet elder daughter Twinkle for lunches often at her residence. Akshay also planned a family vacation to Goa last year to celebrate Kaka’s birthday which falls on December 29.
Apart from his immediate family, Kaka’s old aide Balakrishna and former girlfriend Anju Mahendroo were there by his side till his last day. In fact, Anju and Dimple took turns to be near the actor’s side and kept each other company all through the superstar’s treatment.
While initially Khanna had the willingness to fight the disease and was happy that he had his loved ones around him, in the last one month the superstar lost hope and gave up. He knew that his time was over and the treatment was not going to save him. When the superstar appeared in his last television outing, a commercial for a fan, his fans were shocked to see the shrunken cheeks and the lean frame. The disease perhaps explains it all.
A daily states that he told his family, "The medications are not working. I know my time has come."
The actor wished for a grand farewell and his family ensured that he got all the attention an emperor deserved.
During the cremation, Anju and Dimple stood together and the former was inconsolable.
A prayer meeting would be held on Saturday.
