New Delhi: Sunny Deol turned 57 on Saturday 19th October. The older son of Dharmendra, Sunny is known for his action flicks and powerful dialogue delivery.
Born in Sahnewal village of Punjab near Ludhiana to Dharmendra and his then wife Prakash Kaur, Sunny was initially named Ajay.
He has three siblings, Bobby, Vijayta and Ajeeta. Esha and Ahana are also his half sisters. He is married to Pooja Deol, and they have two sons Karan Deol and Rajvir Deol.
Deol made his debut opposite Amrita Singh in ‘Betaab’, which did pretty well at the Box Office. The movie also won him his first Filmfare award in the Best Actor category. After ‘Betaab’ the star struggled for a few years till the release of 'Arjun'. Playing the titular role, sunny established himself as an action hero.
With a few hits and misses for the next few years, his blockbuster came with ‘Ghayal’. The movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and was a home production for Vijayta Films. It won seven Filmfare Awards including Best Actor for Sunny.
His other hits in the 90s are ‘Narsimha’, ‘Vishwatma’, ’Damini – Lightning’, ’Darr’, ‘Jeet’, ‘Ghatak: Lethal’, ‘Ziddi’ and ‘Border’. ‘Darr’ was a Yash Raj production and was super duper hit and also helped in establishing Shah Rukh Khan’s career.
Anil Sharma’s ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ went to become the highest grossing Bollywood film ever that time and became a phenomenon. Sunny became a staple in the minds of Punjabi movie goers and is considered as one of the biggest stars in North India, surpassing the Khans and the Kapoors.
His next movie with Anil Sharma – ‘Singh Sahab The Great’ is set to release this year, and is already getting great response from his fans.
