Jaipur: Oprah Winfrey is surely getting a royal treatment in her maiden visit to India. The American talk show queen was given a warm welcome at The City Palace in Jaipur on Saturday morning. Writer Deepak Chopra and his wife, too, were present along with Winfrey at the Pink City. The royal welcome that Oprah was treated to consisted of a procession of camels, horses and elephants.
From the main gate of The City Palace to the Chandra Mahal Palace, Oprah travelled on board a royal horse carriage, and was received with a red carpet welcome. Thereafter, a traditional ‘aarti’ was performed in honour of the distinguished guest. Traditional attendees clad in royal attire, also known as the ‘Chaddi Chobdars’, escorted the guests to the Chandra Mahal. Members of the erstwhile royal family of Jaipur, Diya Kumari and husband Narendra Singh, greeted Winfrey, Chopra and his wife.
Winfrey’s trip to India has now seen another resplendent facet of the country. The Jaipur LitFest, for which the talk show host is in the city, might have missed out on Salman Rushdie this year, but has Winfrey to lend her charm to it.
The City Palace was all decked up with lights and Padmini Devi, another member of the royal family, also met Oprah and the other guests. And apart from the many memories that Oprah will be taking along with her, she has silver Ganga urns as a gift from Jaipur, too!
