Mumbai: Supermodel Viveka Babajee’s alleged boyfriend Gautam Vora on Tuesday got interim relief as a sessions court here restrained the police from arresting him on the charge of abetment to suicide without giving him a 72-hour prior notice. Vora, a 32-year old stock broker, had moved the court apprehending arrest on Monday as the deceased had reportedly named him in her suicide note.

The court issued the directions on Vora's anticipatory bail application which it disposed of saying it was not
maintainable as the police had not yet registered a case of abetment to suicide against him.

Principal Judge M L Tahaliyani had directed him to first appear before Khar police yesterday evening and today at 9am which Vora did.

The model’s diary and a suicide note indicated that she had a failed relationship with Vohra and was under immense financial pressure.

Public prosecutor Ramnath V. Kini told media persons outside the court that the police will take custody of Vora only when there is certain evidence pointing that he abetted the suicide.

He will be given 72 hours notice before police decides to arrest him, as per the court’s instructions to the police. The court asked him to cooperate with the police in the investigation which the latter agreed with.

Pulling up the police for the way it is probing the case, Tahaliyani said the investigation is not going in the
right direction. First, the police needs to form an opinion and then start collecting evidence.

Vora has also been asked to not leave the city for the coming week without the court’s permission. He had yesterday claimed that he was “just good friends” with Viveka who was under financial and relationship related depression.

Vora said he was trying to help her and had even met her at her residence a night before she was found hanging in her apartment.

Meanwhile, in a new turn of events Viveka’s landlord revealed today that she wasn’t on good terms with her business partner Karthik, and the two also used to indulge in fights over business matters.

The statement contradicts Karthik’s claim that he had not met Viveka for the past six months. Viveka’s diary had a statement about Karthik: “Karthik why are you harming our business?”.

Babajee killed herself by hanging from the ceiling at her Continental Towers flat in suburban Bandra on June 25.

Police are carrying out their investigation on the basis of things like mobile phone, laptop, diary and a few letters addressed to Vora, that were recovered from Viveka’s residence.
