Mumbai: Yakub Memon, the younger brother of one of the most wanted gangsters Tiger Memon, feels that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is being too soft on Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. Yakub has been sentenced to death for executing the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. His brother Tiger, the mastermind behind the inhuman act is absconding.
“The evidence against Yakub is identical. There are confessional statements which have been retracted. But even though the standard of evidence against Dutt and the other accused was same, the CBI chose not to file appeal against his acquittal from Tada charges,” a daily quoted Jaspal Singh, Yakub’s lawyer as saying.
Dutt was sentenced to six years of rigorous imprisonment on July 31, 2007 under the Arms Act by special judge P D Kode. The actor was convicted for illegally possessing a 9mm pistol and an AK 56 rifle. But he was bailed out in the following month.
Sanjay had earlier served 16 months jail term post his arrest on 19 April 1993.
The Tada court had said that the crime committed by Sanjay Dutt and his friends was not ``anti-social, ghastly, inhuman, immoral or pre-planned``. Their act did not harm the general public.
