A cover-up worse than the crime

The case of Bitti Mohanty has perhaps hogged the limelight as no other rape incident in the country had ever done in the last one decade. It was an incident that played itself into the headlines and the reason behind such hype could obviously be attributed to the fact that, the victim was a German lady who made that shocking revelation after an amazing silence of almost twelve hours of the alleged incident!

The other apparent reason is that the accused happens to be the son of a senior police officer in Orissa. So it has become a prize quest for the Rajasthan government and a task for the Orissa government which the latter seems to be running away from.

One might lose count of the incidents of rapes and ghastly sexual outrages that has taken place in last one decade. Imagine the number of the population of unwed mothers sulking in shelter homes or just wandering as footloose dolls. Not a hair wilts.

The prime accused in the Anjana Mishra rape case in Orissa is still untraced even after a lapse of several years. It was in fact an incident the impact of which resulted in a political regime in the state being toppled but till date the police have failed to apprehend the main culprit.

Bad, if Biti Mohanty has done anything that amounts to outrage of someone's modesty and, worse, if senior Mohanty despite being a reputed harbinger of law has ever tried to 'unlawfully ', as alleged, help his convict son jump the parole. Biti is untraceable and papa Mohanty is reportedly groping in the dark with an anticipatory bail-shield from Orissa High Court to evade his arrest by the Rajasthan police on charges of framing the plot for his son's escape from jail.

However, all said and done, the quantum of media hype that the case has earned boldly dismisses the emotive essence of the hundreds and thousands of other rape victims in the country who still wait to see the culprits punished. A slight flutter in this case makes the media community jump out of its skin and hound the Mohantys. Even some media houses opted to deploy special teams in Cuttack from their headquarters and the pursuit was undisputedly 'breaking news'.

The perils of liberation that Biti Mohanty must be facing are not hard to guess. As regards B.B.Mohanty and his reported statements, they tend to detach him from any relationship with Biti's parole, confounding the confusion. In fact, it has become a kind of horseplay in which it is hard to make out who hits whom.
