CBI turns to yoga to beat stress

India's top investigative agency, under pressure from its political masters and courts to show results of an ever-increasing number of cases, has turned to the country's ancient wisdom to de-stress its personnel.

India's top investigative agency, under pressure from its political masters and courts to show results of an ever-increasing number of cases, has turned to the country's ancient wisdom to de-stress its personnel.
The federal Central Bureau of Investigation has introduced a session of Yoga, ancient science of life in India, to provide an outlet to mental and physical stress and related ailments of its personnel.

The CBI has roped in New Delhi-based Prajana Institute of Yoga and Allied Sciences to help its officers to get rid of professional stress.

The programme aims at promoting a healthy lifestyle. The officers are being taught to practice yoga at any place including the office.

Girish Jha, Yoga Trainer from the Institute said Yoga would help the personnel release their stress within a shorter period of time.

"They are always on stress not only at the mental level, they are also on their toes. Even at the physical level, they have tremendous amount of stress. We wanted, in fact, to take up this opportunity to guide and inspire the CBI officers to know their own ancient wisdoms of yoga nature cure and Ayurveda to help themselves release their emotional, physical and mental stress in a shorter period of time," Jha said.

Indian authorities, who have introduced such practice sessions for Army personnel as well, say yoga sessions are helping officers, who face strenuous working conditions - both mentally and physically.

The officers of the agency themselves feel this sessions would help them.

"Of course, we have understood the basics and now keep going with whatever we have learnt and bring into our daily routine and practice and definitely there will be a change in the way we think and work," said Krishnamurthy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Central Bureau of Investigation.

Analysts say security agencies in India are witnessing a high level of stress among its personnel.

A number of stress related cases have taken place in the past involving security personnel.
