New Delhi: Zee News producer Rajeet Ranjan Sinha is one of the six who have been chosen for the Association of International Broadcasting (AIB) Media Excellence Awards, London for his programme Main Jeena Chahta Hoon, which explores the plight of an AIDS victim. The story was aired in the programme Jaago India on November 8, 2006.

This is a truly global competition, best of the best have competed for just one award in each category, and it can be considered the Oscar for TV news as it is now in the top six programmes worldwide, said a delighted Rajeet.

About the inspiration behind the programme, Rajeet said that a distress email from Umashankar Panday, an HIV positive patient and the president of the Kachchh Network of Positive People, prompted Rajeet to make the AIDS’ victim’s voice heard.

The programme was the first of its kind on Indian television and was appreciated by foreign countries also. Last year Rajeet won the EU - India Media Awards, in the television category, for reporting on HIV/AIDS. The awards have been instituted under the EU-India Media Initiative on HIV/AIDS, a project implemented by The Thomson Foundation with financial assistance from the European Union. Rajeet, while expressing his delight at receiving the award said, “It felt good to receive the award. But more importantly, I want to create awareness on this issue of vital concern.”

The award winners went on a weeklong study tour to London and visited institutions working in the area of health in general and HIV/AIDS in particular.

Rajeet said that he has also done a half-an-hour special on high altitude warfare training, which too was the first of its kind on Indian television. This programme was acknowledged by the then Chief of Army Staff J J Singh and was sent to 35 countries by the Army early this year. The report also soared the popularity chart of the channel. Talking about other high points in his career, Rajeet feels that while he was in UK on a British Chevening Scholarship in 2004, he did a story on `Assault on Ambulance Crew in UK`. During the course of this he was assaulted too. This was considered one of the best stories as well, and was later telecast on Zee News.

Not only this, Rajeet also produced a love story with two colleagues from Romania and Malaysia at Cardiff in which he played the lead role. This was shown on the National Network of Romania and was lauded.

In his previous assignment at Miditech, Rajeet worked on several programmes for national and international channels, including BBC World, AXN and MTV and also received an award for exemplary performance at its Annual General Meeting.
