The speed at which Hyderabad is hurtling towards modernisation was amply demonstrated when a group of 54 villagers was able to experience air travel for the first time in their lives. The credit for this feat goes entirely to the burgeoning real estate boom that has sent prices soaring heavenwards. It couldn’t have been more of a contrast to compare the plight of villagers in the Ranga Reddy district adjoining Hyderabad not too long ago with what it is today. The village of Ameerpet was just another neglected rural area where residents lacked the most basic of amenities.

All that changed once the site of the new international airport was chosen. Ameerpet being in close proximity to the site, soon underwent an unprecedented metamorphosis as real estate prices went spiraling to new heights virtually overnight.

Recently 54 residents of the village, now wealthy beyond their wildest dreams decided to experience air travel for making a darshan to Lord Balaji in Tirupathi. This was indeed a significant move for the group, most of which had never even seen the inside of a luxury bus or an AC compartment.

Following the experience, their enthusiasm was overwhelming. M Narasimha spoke most highly of the caring ladies (better known as air hostesses) on the Kingfisher Airlines flight.

Balraj is yet to get over the change that was brought about merely due to the proximity of the new international airport to their village. Land prices catapulted, earning them riches galore. Sudarshan agrees saying things couldn’t have been more different ten years back when nobody could even have imagined the extent of change in store.

The construction of the international airport by GMR Group has sparked off a building frenzy with new townships sprouting up all around the area. For the existing residents, the transformation is for all to see as traditional houses are making way for concrete structures. Flashy cars have suddenly started appearing everywhere and children are getting the benefit of education from English medium schools.

Ameerpet Sarpanch P Kumari has major plans for the village and she aims to develop the village according to the standard of cities with concrete roads, proper drainage, water tank and all other facilities. She also reveals that it is the turn of the womenfolk to experience air travel after their men and she herself intends to lead the group in the eye-opening adventure.
