Kashmir: A golfing paradise in the making

With its sprawling meadows teemed with a favourable climate, Kashmir is becoming a favourite destination for domestic and international tourists not just because of its majestic surroundings but also for availability of golf courses. Apart from providing a unique opportunity to play golf throughout the period from April to November, Kashmir has an edge over many places due to its natural slopes.

The renowned 18-hole Royal Spring Golf Course in Srinagar overlooks the famous Dal Lake with the picturesque backdrop in the rising Zabarwan hills, a venue, which is now part of the national circuit.

"Royal Springs golf course is made in order to attract the high spending foreign tourists. It is a golf course on international standards which has the capacity to give a major boom to the tourism ministry because golf tourism is on a high," said Aijaz Ahmed, Engineer, Royal Spring golf course.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has invested about five to six million rupees for promotion of the sport and expects the golf sport to pick up in the coming days.

"The whole circuit is developing. We have some pastures on golf course in Sanasar in Jammu, where we have made a golf course in the wild. There is a wide variety of golfing entertainment. I feel the slowly things are picking up. Golf in itself can be a very good attraction for people in that sector to come to Kashmir," said Nayeem Akhtar, Commissioner secretary tourism.

Kashmir was once a top Asian tourist destination, popular among skiers, trekkers, anglers and river rafters. It also has two of the world's most beautiful golf courses.

Large number of Kashmiri skiers also flock to the snow slopes of nearby Gulmarg, where the other attraction is what is said to be the world's highest green golf course, set at an altitude of 2,650 metres (8,745 ft).

The layout of the course too is strikingly different from most golf courses- the land slopes and inclines along the complete area of the course, which has a par of 72.

In the verdant golf courses at Srinagar and Gulmarg, one can play for longer hours than in the plains because of the lower temperatures - Srinagar's highest temperature seldom goes above 35°C.
