Washington: ‘Hunger Games’ cast members became the subjects of offensive and racist tweets, as fans of Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster young adult novel took a dig at some of the actors’ races.
According to Jezebel.com, both the characters of Rue and Thresh are described as having “dark brown skin” in the book, but some fans object that both Amandla Stenberg and Dayo Okeniyi, who play these roles in the film, are black. “Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie,” Us Magazine quoted one fan as saying on Twitter. Another fan added, “Why did the producer make all the good characters black?” “Why is Rue a little black girl? Stick to the book, dude,” said another. One more fan admitted in a tweet that he was “racist” when he learned of tragic Rue’s racial identity. One tweeter even uttered the “N” word in decrying African-American actress Amandla Stenberg’s race. “I’m still pissed that Rue is black,” one fan wrote. “Ewwww rue is black?? I’m not watching,” another said. ANI
