Los Angeles: `Rio` a 3D film about two parrots on the run from poachers has beaten `Scream 4`, the much awaited installment of the hit slasher franchise, to the top of the weekend box-office.
While `Rio` grossed a solid USD 40 million, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox, `Scream 4` collected USD 19.3 million, reported Los Angeles Times online. The animated film starring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg had the biggest opening weekend of any film in the US so far this year. The film which cost about USD 90 million to produce, had already grossed USD 75 million heading into the weekend and premiered in 21 additional countries this weekend. The fourth installment of `Scream` which reunites the original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, was made on a budget of USD 40 million. But its debut fell far short of the most recent installments of the horror series. In 1997 `Scream 2` opened to USD 32.9 million, while 2000`s `Scream 3` started off with USD 34.7 million. It has been 11 years since the last time the iconic ghostface killer was on the big screen. PTI
