London: Hollywood has been accused of ‘whitewashing’ after roles that required actors of Asian or Middle Eastern descent were given to white actors in the movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal, an American of Swedish and Jewish orgin, has the lead role.
Brit Gemma Arterton plays Gyllenhaal’s princess, who is the daughter of a cleaner from Gravesend, Kent.
According to critics, the casting was the latest example of Hollywood giving roles with disparity.
“This part really needed to go to someone who’s Persian. It’s not only insulting Persians, it’s also insulting to white people. It’s saying white people can’t enjoy movies unless the protagonist is white,” Independent filmmaker Jehanzeb Dar said.
