‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ tops weekend box office

Washington: ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ has topped the weekend box office, with a revenue of 54 million dollars.

The 20th Century Fox action thriller took in almost 15 to 20 million dollars more than the analysts expected, still lagging behind the 68.5 million dollar opening mark of Tim Burton’s ‘Planet of the Apes’ remake 10 years ago, Fox News reported.

The flick, well received by critics, features James Franco, Freida Pinto and Andy Serkis and narrates the tale of the evolution of lower primates, who take over the Earth from humans.

‘The Smurfs’ retained its 2nd position for the second weekend, with ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ falling to the 3rd position, and ‘The Change-Up’ to fourth, followed by ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ to the fifth.

The top ten movies for the weekend are:

3. ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ – 15.8 million dollars

4. ‘The Change-Up’ –13.5 million dollars

7. ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ – 12.1 million dollars

8. ‘Friends with Benefits’ – 4.7 million dollars

9. ‘Horrible Bosses’ – 4.6 million dollars

10. ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ – 3 million dollars
