New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) Friday said it was unhappy with Colors channel`s reply to its notice over portraying women in a poor light in the serial ‘Na Aana Is Des Laado’.
"We have received the response to our notice from Colors TV and I went through it but am not satisfied with what they had to say. We will take further action in the matter," NCW chairperson Girja Vyas told reporters.
‘Na Aana Is Des Laado’ is aired on Colors on weekdays and deals with the issue of female foeticide.
The NCW, in consultation with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), took strong objection to the serial, saying that it projected women in poor light and sought an explanation from the channel.
A notice was served to the makers of the serial and the channel last month.
"It is a derogatory serial which outrages the modesty of women. It is likely to deprive, corrupt or injure the public morality and appears violative of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 as well as the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995," Vyas said.
The Commission had written to the central government on the issue and was going to take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she had said.
At the last statutory full commission meeting of the NHRC, P.C. Sharma, member of the rights body, raised the issue of female foeticide and said steps must be taken to stop telecasting serials showing cruelty towards women and children.
"There is a difference between spreading awareness on a subject and portraying it in a manner that it seems like you are glorifying a heinous act. Such serials fall in the latter category," an NHRC official said.
