Satyamev Jayate: When Aamir Khan met the unsung heroes of India Gayatri Sankar

Nikal Pado Re Bandhu Nikal Pado Re…Nikal Pado Re Arey Na Mumkin Bhi Mumkin Hove Karke Dekho Re Bandhu…Nikal Pado Re…

The first season of Aamir Khan’s debut TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ culminated with a beautiful and a thoughtful message asking us to embark upon a journey where one could translate the impossible into the possible. Since its inception, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ has inspired an ocean of humanity across the globe and has also ushered in sea change by persistent efforts and sheer commitment.

The last leg of the show’s first season saw Aamir Khan playing a proud host to a number of unsung heroes, who the world had not known, whose noble initiatives changed a number of lives and is continuing to do so.

The point of contention was the constitutional right of every individual in the country. The very first leaf of the Constitution of India speaks of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. And in his show 'Satyamev Jayate', Aamir reminded the audience of the fundamental rights of an Indian citizen.

The first guests on the show were the trustees of Sarvodaya Trust in Gujarat, who braved opposition and provided a roof to homeless Muslim children, who had fallen prey to communal riots in the state a few years back. The Trust is now a unique shelter that provides unconditional support to children of the minority community and treats them as equals.

Communal violence is omnipresent and the state of Jammu and Kashmir stands witness to the savagery that mindless violence can unleash.

Asha Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit had contemplated to leave her village in fear of losing her life like many other Hindus in the state. And when she went to inform her Muslim neighborhood about her plans to leave the village for good, their love forced her to change her own decision. She was eventually elected a Sarpanch by the Muslim dominated village and now leads a peaceful life in the village where both Hindus and Muslims co-exist happily.

After highlighting communal unity, Aamir shifted the focus towards casteism and how Sanjeev, a commoner leading a comfortable life in the national capital decided to change the plight of the untouchables in his village in Bihar. And with determination and selflessness, Sanjeev led the way and helped the people of backward class fight for their rights.

The concluding episode of the show was a learning experience where one and all could seek inspiration from others. One such inspiring lady who was a guest on the show was Sunitha Krishnan, who runs an organization called Prajwala. Sunitha was gang-raped by eight men when she was just 8 years old and hence her organization works towards women and girl children who have been physically abused or were forced into flesh trade. Sunitha braved the mafia and refused a number of prostitutes to give them a better life and make them self-sufficient by employing them in her organization.

It was then time for Naseema to narrate her journey. A handicapped woman herself, Naseema is an inspiration for many other physically disabled people. She trains them to be self-reliant and financially independent. Her trust helps them to lead a normal life.

Like Naseema, Subhasini Mistry too gathered great strength from her belief that she could do something for the helpless in the society. After having lost her husband to illness, Subhasini, a vegetable vendor had to put her younger son into an orphanage due to financial constraints. And the dutiful son of the hardworking mother now runs a hospital called “Humanity” in West Bengal and gives free treatment to the poor and needy. “Humanity” was Subhasini’s dream, which is now a reality.

After Mistry, it was the turn of Babar Ali, a 19 year old boy and perhaps the world’s youngest School principal to share his experience. He provides free education to the underprivileged children in his locality. And Wipro founder Azim Premji, who works towards educating a number of rural children too shared his experiences with Aamir

‘Satyamev Jayate’ unfolded a number of stories that were beyond imagination. One such story was that of Mohammed Sharif alias Sharif Chacha from Uttar Predesh. Sharif had lost his son and could never find his body. And hence could not perform his last rites. Now he gives unclaimed bodies their respectful last rites irrespective of their religion. One can see him in a Muslim graveyard and even at a Hindu cremation ground paying his last respect to the departed souls.

And after Chacha, Aamir shifted the focus to whistleblower Satyendra Dubey, an honest engineer who was shot dead for uncovering corruption in the system. Dubey’s death had made headlines and had created a huge uproar in the country. And at the end of the show, the inspirational story of Dashrath Maaji who personified passion, determination and courage was narrated. Maaji had single-handedly carved a path through a mountain alienating his village from the nearest town with his hand-held tools. He was made fun of and ridiculed by the villagers for even thinking of trying to break the mountain. But Dashrath was passionate about what he was doing. It took 22 years to complete the task and now thousands are reaping the fruits of his efforts.

The curtains are drawn temporarily but the effect of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is bound to create ripples in the country and hopefully bring in more change in the way we perceive India now.

Hi, I have read most of the comments and have been watching a show as well. Well first of all i really appreciate and would like to salute Amir Khan for such a great work. Secondly what i have to say is unless each one of us becomes aware of a situation in day to day's life and analyse it properly then i guess the conclusion that can be drawn is - Rich people and politicians have become greedy . .. they dont have to do anything with the society's upcoming and development in healthcare and education. Yet they are craving for more and more money (which ultimately buys them undisputed POWER). If all this has to be changed then the only way is giving a better education to the society at their affordable cost. Trust me people, there's this only way, We need to revolutionise the EDUCATION process to such an extent that every individual at the age of 15 or 18 should be capable to differentiate between what's right , ethical and legal. He or she should be intellectually capable enough to fight against injustice. and somehow our dear ministers (few of them) are well aware of the fact that if such an education is given to the society then they will lose the power coz the people will unite and stand against them and what the decision makers are thinking is good for them i.e. to keep public in the dark so by the time they realise that something is not going right and they should raise voice against it, they have already lived 38 yrs of their life. And now the voice inside them which doesn't let them sleep at a times is suppressed by the responsibilities of a family, maintaining social status, regular trips to doctor, googling the secrets of a healthy life and all they can do at the most is tell their grandchildren stories about their so called PEACEFUL life. i am sure at some age they regret the fact that they did not let that fire explode the voice inside them dies with them. coz everybody cannot remain Anna Hazare all the life. Now, just a food for thought- What if 20 yr old is capable enough to know what is Just and fair, how the system should be and along with it he/she is intellectually capable enough (or we do not want them to join naxalite movement)to make the right decision and raise the voice against injustice, unite for a cause and fight. Wouldn't it be great?? Now this can e achieved through EDUCATION and EDUCATION be it moral, spreading awareness of a system which is ruling us etc. All we need is a spark and i think Amir khan has given it bout unfortunately we need 1 million Amir khans to revolutionise it and lets face the naked truth guys , Even Amir Khan might have an idea about it that his lifetime aint long enough to bring such a change ! But not to give up we can at least expect our grandchildren or maybe their grandchildren to live in the India that Nehru dreamt of the India that Gandhi dreamt of , India In which Rajguru and Bhagat Singh would have liked to live in, India for which Abdul Hamid gave his life to. India whose Preamble goes like "WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a _1[SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC] and to secure to all its citizens: JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION." - Adinath - Pune
@Raj from Mumbai: Unfortunately Amir Khan is more Hindu and Indian than you are! The idea of liberty, equality, justice and fraternity are "Indian" values, not Western values. And Democracy is as much Indian than it is Western because today more Indians participate in elections than Western citizens! Amir Khan has done his patriotic duty in improving the society around him using his talents and his voice. I am proud of him and his accomplishments. More than you or I have. It is the product of a small mind filled with ignorance and hatred that denies the truth we Indians have been taught - people call God by different names but all paths reach the same goal. - Vir-Raj - India
Mr Raj from Mumbai, u have just missed the entire point of the show! Sad !Are we not meant to co exist in peace without labeling that u r a HINDU...u r a MUSLIM?Does not India belong to all of us or does it belong only to hindus? - Mashkura - Dubai
I am not to certain that people are realising what is happening in India. Satyamev jayate is trying to change Hindu way of life.Usher in western democratic principles in a society which is not made that way .Hope it does not create havoc here like it did in Libya Iraq and middle east. Each society has a culture .Being a muslim Aamir khan is just scratching the surface of something he does not understand .I dont think a bigamist like him has a right to make such shows. The Hindu India has lost its identity .Sorry state of affairs !! Remember western democracy is not a natural way of life and cannot sustain itself!! - Raj - Mumbai
I think it has been a great initiative from Aamir and Satyamev Jayate team, they are trying to bring changes in out Indian society by highlighting its deep rooted issues. This is a gradual and time consuming process to changed thinking of complete generations. It will take time but surely they will succeed in their goal. I wish Aamir and Satyamev Jayate team All the Best and may they bring fresh issues of Indian society in future... - Sumit Shrivastava - Pune

taboos bogging down Indian national life are so vast t the shat one season of stayamevjayate is inadequately insufficient to even highlight the problems. it is good work but insufficient. - archana - delhi
Hats off to people who have been doing selflessly great work in Indian society. Thanks to Aamir for giving some sort of recognition to these people at the national level. - Naveen - US
Hi Aamir, we (Indians) are very proud of you. We want Satyameva Jayate more and more seasons. - Farha - Hyderabad
"The point of contention was the constitutional right of every individual in the country. The very first leaf of the Constitution of India speaks of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. And in his show 'Satyamev Jayate', Aamir reminded the audience of the fundamental rights of an Indian citizen". Never forget what Amir has shown us through this show . Just start forward one step. - Nivedita - India
Hats off to Amir.He had shown his class earlier as well but this time it is a class apart. There are MPs Ministers and others with crores of public fund at their disposal for taking initiatives to free Mother India from myriad maladies she has been suffering for long.Either some of those with keys to the exchequer preferred to side with the power brokers to share the spoils and preferred to keep a blind eye on issues. There were others like the communists who even preferred to side with the British when the question on autonomy came (read Quit India). It is here that a son of Mother India with what ever at his disposal, preferred to make use of his hard earned name and fame, preferred to make use of a medium(Television) to drive home some points in focus which were either neglected or thought as irrelevant by those in power.Rich Tribute to your nation Amir and thanks for all your good effort. Hope that there would at least be few more sons and daughters of Mother India in India or elsewhere to take the baton from him. - C P VIJAYAN - Calicut
Exlellent programme,I don't have much time for television but I never miss SATYA MEVA JAYATE .I watch it latenight so no one can disturb me. You should have started this kind of awareness longtime back, but it is never late.We are proud of you AMIR KHAN. It is not easy to bring sensetive topic. Well done.I have seen changes, since I left India 35 yeas back.It is still long way to go.People have to come out of the shell.Thank you for guiding us towards right move. JAYHIND. - Mrs Paleja Pratibha - Hastings (U K)
To: Actor, Mr Aamir Khan Re : Follow Up After Satyamev Jayate Dear Mr Aamir Khan, Namaste Your TV serials have earned great admiration at national level and beyond on your dedicated great effort to render true service to mankind through your well intentioned and convincing noble ideas. I congratulate you and admire your concern for the welfare of society with gratitude. This has generated awareness amongst masses along with admiration no doubt, but I sincerely feel that people have very short memory in this very busy world and very few really benefit on a long term basis from such noble efforts unless these are pursued beyond mere awareness, I am sure you will agree. The common folks blame on the circumstances around them and show their helplessness to tackle the large part of service/product providers, institutions steeped deep in corrupt and evil practices nationwide and continue to remain the victims. You will appreciate, unless a follow up on your awareness campaign and reaching out to such corrupt/evil people and setups both in the Govt and private sectors are formulated and introduced, you would have gone only half circle in your efforts. I very strongly feel, if simultaneously measures are thought of for inculcating human values in the society right from childhood through the medium of education besides adult counseling as you are doing now through the most powerful media of TV, you will be able to go the full circle. I have been keenly observing and even contributing in my own small way towards the well being of human race to which all of us have our sacred duty to perform. I have been writing and addressing at various forums on social issues advocating recourse to moral and spiritual means to address the same for quite some time now. Should you need to call upon me to associate myself, I will be too glad to do so. However, sensing, that you do go into length and breadth of topics you deal with, you would have already thought of these suggestions that I make to you now. But, then, I sincerely feel you would need suggestions, help and support from concerned experts / social reformers across the country. I pray and hope, you may find my suggestions appropriate and useful. With Best Wishes and Regards Dr S.C.Mahajan - Dr S.C Mahajan - CHENNAI TAMIL NADU INDIA
This was a great show of Mr Amir Khan. Bravo to him and his team. Show must go on.. and on...There are many unsung heroes where this society do deny their basic rights. The name ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is actually derived from the empire of Ashoks the Great, where he treated its citizens as his own children. His rule had strong foundation of liberty, equality, fraternity and justice to all. The same principle has been enshrined in the Constitution of India by Vishwa Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar. Even after passage of 65 years of independence the country has not achieved its goals enshrined in this great Constitution. At present, the country is at pathetic state of affairs, because of unfit representatives (Nalayak) are sponsored by all the political parties to sit in Temple of Powers. It seems there are more than 130 MPs who are involved in all kind of criminal cases. All are not criminal minds. To name a few Mr ND Tiwari, Sukhram, A Raja, Suresh Kalmadi and many more. As a natural justice all the property belongs to its citizens, but BJP/Congress Party Govt sold out the 9 James (PSUs) of India, to allow LPJ to loot the country. Sarvodaya Trust of Gujarat, Asha Bhat, a Kashmiri, Poor Naseema a hadicapped, Poor Subhasini Mistry, vegitable vender, Poor Babar Ali, a 19 year old boy, Poor Sharif Chacha from UP,late patriotic Satyendra Dubey,an IIT Engr,Dashrath Manjhi, all these very much eligible for the highest award of Bharat Ratna. But todya's MPs of their stature would not think to, whereas Rules are amended to award Bharat Ratna to Mr Sachin Tendulkars. This so called great legend must learn many things from the poor of the poorest Dhashrat Manjhi who had no food, clothes and shelter, but his shaking hands did not stop his wish for 22 years. Had the confidential letter of Mr Satendra Duby did not send by the then PM to his Deptt, the life of Mr Dubey would have saved and necessary inquiry would have brought the culprits to the book. We hope that a day will come when these unfit representatives would get their due fate but good sense must prevail on the citizens while sponsoring unfit candidates. Salute to all known and unknown real heroes of poor India. "Our country is not poor, but our thinking is really poor" is the message I want to give to all. - mg more - 9021583845
Let us hope that the highly commendable efforts put in by Aamir and company do not have the same fate as those of umpteen number of films in Hindi and regional languages on such noble causes. There is no dearth in inspirational films, but sadly Indians have this bad memory which makes them instantly forget what they see. No doubt there will be some ripples for a short time, but nobody, not even those who can bring in a change like the politicians or bureaucracy will take any initiative to improve the pathetic conditions shown in any of the 13 episodes. If that were the case where an inspirational film brought in some positive change, then India would have become 'Mera Bharat Mahan' decades ago. Films play an influential role only if there is violence, crime and goondaism. I may sound negative or pessimistic, but that is the sad truth. Good luck to Aamir and to India. - Naveen Soni - Thrissur
It will be just that i.e a much talked about program which even achieves cult status but no followup action. Maybe every state should start a similar program in their own language. The government and corporate sector could setup a fund to assist development programs that are started by NGOs and enterprising individual with a conscience. Don't get caught up in just achieving your own self gratifying goals. - Raman Manian - Asian
