‘Satyamev Jayate’: Aamir Khan says treat the disabled as equals Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: The sixth episode of Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’ dealt with the disabled section of the Indian society. The host, who has succeeded in striking an emotional chord with the masses, spoke about how people generally treat their disabled countrymen.

Citing a number of inspirational messages through videos of disabled people, the episode discussed the rights to education for all, irrespective of physical ability.

However, the Indian society is seldom open to accepting people with physical or mental disability in the mainstream section. Most parents do not appreciate having disabled children in regular schools as they fear it might cast a negative impact on their children and hence institutions refrain from admitting disabled kids. And this indifferent attitude of people has been projected in the episode of the show.

The show played host to blind and lame men who narrated their inspiring stories and proved that they too could fall within the bracket of the fittest and survive with pride.

The audiences also stood witnesses to a noble initiate called ‘Amar Jyoti’, a school that welcomes all kinds of children and treats them as equals.

And equal treatment would only begin when the government takes appropriate measures to treat them as one among the many from the mainstream section of the society.

With over 6 crore people with disability in the Indian society, the need of the hour is to have disabled friendly infrastructure that will enable such people to have trouble free access to public places and vehicles.

The show also urged companies to hire men and women with disability so that they too could contribute to the Indian economy.

Captain Brar, a resident of Ahmedabad has set an example by setting up a company with over 270 disabled people employed. And according to him his company is doing exceptionally well because of their efforts and hard work.

At the end, Aamir spoke about the need to have inclusive educational institutions with quality teaching staff and infrastructure in place that will allow disabled children too to be a part of regular schools and have a normal upbringing.

Aamir, aapke aajke episode no.6 dtd.10 June'12 ne mere dil ke un taaron ko jhinjhod diya jo saalon se dabe huye they.Yeh sach hai ki viklaang bhi hum sab jaise insaan hote hain, unme bhi bhavnayein hoti hain aur unhe bhi samaan roop se jeene ka adhikaar milna hi chahiye iss samaj mein jahaan log ek naqli mukhoute se apne chehre aur dil ko chupa ke rakhte hain.Main apki is muhim mein aapke saath aage badhna chahta hun, ek mouka dein..niraash nahi karoonga. Main Kolkata me rehta hun aur yahan ki aisi kisi sanstha se judna chaahta hun aur apni iss jindagi mein kuch aap jaisi hi kuch seva karna chahta hun.Intezaar rahega. - Raj Kumar Gupta - Kolkata
Dear Amir, have been watching all your shows. Today saw the topic "disabled people". Am really impressed with the way you handle each topic. Today also the examples shown were excellent. Felt proud for them and their parents. I am a parent of a SPECIALLY ABLED CHILD. I have two sons, Kaustubh and Pranav. Kaustubh is studying Engg. and Pranav is a DOWNS child. I thought of writing this to you only to bring it to the notice that, in india, the criteria disable person DOESN't INCLUDE children with DOWN Syndrome, autism and slow learner. Our children are really far away from the facilities given by our government. We dont get support in sports, education, learning special skills, which is very well considered in foreign countries. And then employment, it is out of question. care taking of these children after certain age is the real concern for us.Since these children are unable to stay independantly, it becomes a question who will look after them after their parents. Government has not kept any rule of hostels / homes for these children, or any land reservation wherein people come together and start some residential project or a workshop. Government has land reserved for handicaped persons but our category is not considerd in that. People are ready to come together and start a residential project or workshop to keep them busy and earn a bit, but some initial help is required by government. I would request you and your team to handle this issue. The platform of Satyamev jayate with Amir as host is a ray of hope for us. Mentally retarded, autistic, slow learners are disabled too and should be given the right to be part of main stream. I really hope, you read this and if possible put this subject on the platform of Satyamev jayate. Wish you all the best!!! - Mrs. Bhagyashree P. Kunte - Aundh, Pune.
