‘Satyamev Jayate’: Maharashtra flags off Generic medicine stores across the state Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: So the ‘Satyamev Jayate’ phenomenon has made headlines again. And this time, despite fighting their way through a barrage of criticisms and allegations, the ‘Satyamev Jayate’ team can now consider themselves as instrumental in brightening up more lives with their hearty smiles.

A few episodes back, the iconic TV show had exposed the discrepancies and corruption involved in the selling of medicines. The episode further went ahead and exposed several flaws in the medical systems of the country, and as is well-known by now, Aamir Khan and his team have had to receive the criticism of many doctors.

Aamir, however, has a reason – and a huge one – to smile about now. His show has played an important role in the Maharashtra Government giving the green signal to a lot more generic medicine stores than the state now has. The Government announced that Generic medicines would be made available across all Government hospitals. In addition, the State Government has also planned to open medical stores across the state where generic medicines will be stocked in adequate amounts, and will be readily available for people.

Aamir Khan and the ‘Satyamev Jayate’ team are on seventh heaven after receiving the news, and they have profusely thanked Chief Minister of the State, Prithviraj Chauhan and Health Minister, Suresh Shetty.

I HAVE WATCHED ALL THE EPISODE....THANK YOU AAMIR TO MAKE THIS KIND OF SHOW...LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE GIVING YOU BLESSINGS.... - SOUMYA - SILIGURI
Excellent episode. I was enlightened about so many facts about which I had no idea before watching this episode. This episode would have brought a lot awareness among large masses of people who are unaware of the facts about generic medicines. But this is just a beginning. We need to move forward and take some rigid steps going forward to introduce generic medicines all over the country and not only this, permanently cancel the licences of those doctors who are only concerned to make money and play with the lives of the people. - Gurpreet Singh - Delhi, India
Very nice episodes. I feel that Amir should have gone more indepth. He has dramatised (which is also important)the issues and gave their solutions without knowing the intricacies. I will just take one issue initially. It is of generic medicines. 1. Even generics have high MRP marked. 2. The phamacist (chemist), instead gives a high priced product. If a patient is educated, he shows that it has the same ingredient. 3. Pharmacists often tell that these are cheap products and are not effective. 4.All retail chemists do not and will not keep "generic products" unless they have huge margin of profit. Patient/attendant has to visit many pharmacies before he will get a generic. 4. All medicines/molecules are not available in generic. A pharmacy dedicated to generic may not have all the products. 5. The Rajasthan experience is of Government hospitals. Government can force the hospitals (both government and public) to purchase only generics, which are available. There are many molecules of which generics are not manfactured. 6.Generics where posible is a good ides. But why does the government not have price control on all the medicines? 7. This whole issue of drug price is a subject by itself to be discussed indepth. 8. In India, patients have to buy drugs and if there is costly prescription, the compliance is poor, which inturn results in drop outs and increased morbidity and mortality. - Dr. Gurmohan Singh - Varanasi

Dear Mr.Amir, Why don't you produce some more episodes. India is full of problems. Why can't u produce an episode about 'whistleblowers' and their plight and problems. There is no safety in this country for whistleblowers and hence many people hesitate to expose or go against the corrupt system. There is no protection to whistleblowers. Please consider this and try to make some more episodes. I really appreciate your efforts. You are quite different from others in your thoughts. Keep your good work going. Regards, S.Prabhunandan S.Prabhunandan. - prabhunandan - Bangalore
Aamir sir, Thanks for the eye opening show of medicinal corruption, but in generic and PCD medicine only distributor and chemist will be benefited as they are giving high margins and manufacture cost is vary low. Instead of making generic medicine compulsory Indian government should declare the molecule price means, RABEPRAZOLE its molecule which is used to treat the acidity. there is some RABEP..brands selling at Rs1.50/tab and some are selling at Rs6.00 and above and that difference money goes to respective dr through foreign trips, gifts and respective chemist through offers. if government really want to support the comman man then they should fix the molecule price. - PRAVIN PATIL - BELGAUM, KARNATAKA.
hi dear amir is programe se to sabki pol khul jayegi aur apka yeh programe band karna padega sabke saath panga le rahe ho amir lekin sahi kehte hai ki pange ke siva kuch hasil nahi hoga yeh to karna padega kyon ki ASLI MAJA SABKE SAATH ATA HAI........ - ajay Khamkar - navi mumbai
wowwww... !!!!! you did it ... now this is a true HERO .. I salute you sir Mr aamir khan ... plzzz dont stop this show .. there are 1000 s of problems in our country which can be mostly solved with this show After .. may be you should keep an episode of the results which took place after your show ... wat government did ????? wat public did ????? wat a person did ???? - vijay rao - mumbai
Hi My father is Pharmaceutical distributor in Maharashtra(Solapur) and he is interested in providing generic medicines so I want to know how to get information on opening a shop with generic medicine. It will be great if you can direct us to right person or firm which help us on doing so. - Laxmi-Mamta - Solapur
its mearly an EYE WASH by moharastra govt.My question to Mr HEALTH MINISTER, being a health minister are u not aware of GENIRIC MEDICINES earlier, or Mr AMIR KHAN tought u this. 1)If u knew it earlier n not materilising this concept by OPENING GENIRIC STORES , its a crime on part of u as state people are cheated for so many years. 2)If u didnot know what is GENIRIC MEDICINES,it is again a crime. - pranay - sambalpur
Iam very gald to hear that because of your hard work aamir sir the generic medicines has opened all over the world so that even poor people can get medicines in a low rate.Sir i wish as u have completed 10 episodes, the action must be taken for each episode.Sir no action has been taken for intolernace to love as today still the youngsters are committing suicides because of caste differnces.........Please sir i request you to take action on this topic too. A Grand Salute to you Aamir Sir...............We all are with you - sweety - hyderabad
well if possible then please also investigate that how many medical stores are actually ran by pharmacist.because according to drugs and cosmetics act 1948 a pharmacist should always be present at chemist store.but in our country in city like mumbai also 75% shops do not have phamacist present at the store instead they just give their phamacy certificate to chemist shop and themselves work somewhere else.you people are talking of corruption by doctors, what about corruption of these pharmacists and those stores who keep such pharmacists, why their licences are not cancelled.are'nt they playing with common people's life. satyamev jayate - JAGDISH B MEHTA - 7498104466
An eye opening show. We are a registred NGO working in a tribal belt people living below poverty line in large. Just received the license for opening a retail medicine store. Now we are planning to store generic medicines and promote them through our network of volunteers and the local doctors to distribute the same in the locality. Reards, Kishore - A Kishore - Rairangpur, Odisha
While as one appreciates Aamir's efforts, a word of caution regarding generic medicines! The MRP on most of the generic products of good pharmaceutical companies is only slightly less than the branded ones produced by the same companies. There is no doubt that the whole sale price at which the retailers procure these medicines is terribly low. If the doctors start writing generic medicine the ball is thrown in to the retailers' court and it helps only to shift the control from a doctor to a retailer. The retailer than will obviously sell drugs which fetch maximum profit. And then how the quality of the product be ascertained? More important for Aamir and his team will be to unearth who controls the MRP in this country and how a semblance of balance be struck between whole sale price and MRP of generic medicines. - sanwar agrawal - Raipur
