'Barfi' Review: It is an out and out entertainer! Resham Sengar

How well it is said that true love is blind to all the prejudices set down by the materialistic society. It can nourish itself deeply even in the midst of penury and follow a completely no-holds-barred course. Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ is just about that. ‘Barfi!’ narrates the story of the namesake character Barfi (originally named as Murphy by his parents) who has a speech and hearing impairment and lives every single day of his life to the hilt and how!

South Indian actress Illeana D’Cruz gets into the skin of her character named Shruti to tell the magical tale of Barfi (played by Ranbir Kapoor) who happens to be a happy-go-lucky character that lives with his ageing father in Darjeeling of 1970s. Barfi is endearing for his cute Chaplin-meets-Mr. Bean acts but more than that for his innocent and simple heart. In a typical rich girl meets a poor guy story, Barfi chances upon Shruti on her visit to Darjeeling and she finds herself losing her heart to him despite the fact that she is engaged to a wealthy man back in Kolkata. After a brief romance, Shruti chooses material comforts over true love and leaves Barfi heartbroken to marry the moneyed man.

Enter an autistic Jhilmil Chatterjee (played by Priyanka Chopra), who belongs to an affluent family in Darjeeling but her family barely cares for her sensitive needs. Even as Barfi tries to pick up the pieces of his broken heart, he finds his father battling kidney failure. Penniless Barfi looks for all ways to get the money for his treatment but in vain. When left with no other way, quite unwillingly, Barfi plans with his best friend to kidnap Jhilmil and blackmail her parents for the money. And then, as the story unfolds, Barfi and Jhilmil realise that they are perfect to share their life with each other, keeping their physical imperfections aside. On the other hand, even after 6 years of marriage, Shruti comes to know that she still has strong feelings for Barfi.

Ranbir Kapoor delivers an award-winning performance. After lapping up awards last season with his role in ‘Rockstar’, Ranbir easily slips into the role of Barfi and leaves the audience speechless. Barfi’s character reiterates an important lesson- that life is about finding happiness in small things rather than in being wasted in lusty pursuits. Priyanka Chopra does her autistic act with finesse without going overboard and Bollywood newbie Illeana D’Cruz fares well as a girl battling societal norms, her own wishes and finally, her beloved’s happiness. In fact, one can’t decide who the shining star of the film is- Ranbir for his hilarious cute act or Priyanka as the autistic Jhilmil who yearns to be considered as a woman.
The story moves back and forth from 1978, 1972 and 2012 in an easy-to-follow fashion and the film’s songs are simply soulful. Cinematographer Ravi Varman captures the picturesque North Bengal in a splendid way. Each frame seems like a beautiful painting.

All in all, Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi!’ is a perfect sweet treat for his audience. Like it has been discussed, those film makers who have been portraying the handicapped as dull and boring in their films must take a lesson from ‘Barfi!’. Go and savour it!

Rating: Five cheers to this one!

i like the movie theme, its different from all movie, actually its mean that a disability does not cause destraction for lovie, - anupama - kerala
Love is easy language, whoever you want to communicate even to the challenged persons. All the scene of Barfi talks more than what he wants to talks. About Jilmil character, a person "autistic" by nature, here it reflects a lot of emotions, lot of feelings, possessiveness.... As Shruti narrates the story in a nice way......! Here and there I find this storyline matches with the Hollywood movie "The Notebook", Barfi makeup and fun with light post & night time at road...!, shruti mother's love story, life choice is similar to The Notebook Movie. The climax scene is same as Notebook, but the character and story's suspense is different....! I really enjoyed such everlasting and lovable pair Barfi and Jilmil.....! No more words to explain more....! my remaining silence speaks more about the success of the movie......! Really wonderful movie..! - latha - puduvai
good cinematography,,, pieces of scenes borrowed from here and there (Notebook, charlie chaplin ) and stacked together nicely , lovely lovely quaint darjeeling town premise with calcutta 's daily market hustle bustle, warm movie,, good depiction of human vulnerability, flaws, imperfections and inspite of that passionate love between two disabled humans.Innocence in the characters makes it poignant, you sympathize for them at times , also appreciate their jolly attitude towards lifes,, excellent execution. Although the movie has borrowed ideas, scences from other movies,, the new surrounding new culture and language adds value to the movie, thats is what I think is the best part about the movie. The movie could have been a disaster , a copy ... but director has done justice to those movies ,,, the movie has veins and arteries of good scene running throughout and captures not just one heart but everybody through characters innocence and love that grows deep inside the heart of two individuals whose lifes have been compromised with their physical and functional features. The main cast is such a happy go lucky type persona that one would fall in love at sight with him ,,, the movie in a way teaches you to find happiness in small things in life and be grateful to what you have... if life gives you a lemon ,make a lemonade,,, thats what is the movie about,...motivational, and inspiring very warm inspite of the vulnerability of the character. - Dina - Universe
Its a good movie but its not worth for going to oskar's. They took some parts from every other comedy films released till date and mixed it together to get "BURFI". Instead of sending burfi to oskars i would have recommended english vinglish. Any way some idiots in FFI thought burfi is worth without watching the film. - Unni - chennai
Barfi is a heart warming film which cannot leave anyone unmoved. Ranbir is deserving of a best actor award for this movie and Priyanka for the best actress. Ileana's role is very much praise worthy she has done a great job. By far this is one of the best movies i have seen in a long time. All the best for the Oscars Barfi team ! - Medha - Mauritius
Barfi!- A Must watch movie. Ranbeer, Priyanka & Ileana's character are too good. Although some scenes are copied from Charlie Chaplin movies & some from Sadma (Kamal Hassan & Sridevi Starrer), but this movie is overall a very good movie. A Family Entertainer. An Excellent movie. - Amit - Hyderabad
I am sure hence forth many movies in Bollywood shall be made similar to birfi and same people who are apreciating barfi will dislike these type of movies because actally this Barfi is a most bore movie liked by people. Surprise. - soj - india
iNDIA IS AWAITING MAJOR EMBARRASSMENT AT THE OSCARS.. FOR PICKING A FILM THAT HAS BEEN COPIED FROM SO MANY HOLLYWOOD MOVIES.. SHAME. - sONIA - nEW yORK
in deed a grt movie!!! Liked d way story has been narrated, n excellent, award winning performance by ranbir n priyanka. Ileana too was grt. The movie depicts d real emotions of the unfortunate ppl. They are alwys innocent and they dont cheat, but ppl ard them take the benefits of their innocence and their inabilities. These unfortunate ppl also do have a life, they do have feelings, they too wanna lead a good life. Anurag basu has brt out the inner feelings of these kind of ppl.. Hats off to u for ur grt work!! u made us think abt our behaviour towrads these ppl.. Alll d best to the whole team of barfii... - shellee - bangalore
The scene where ranbir takes ileana on horse ride and train throwing things out of train to poor people is lifted directly from the English movie fried green tomatoes wonder what Oscar will say to that - Aman - Chandigarh
Its all about true love and it also give moral to us that BY FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON FOR US , WE MAY LOSE THE RIGHT PERSON - Anshuman Gupta - Lakhimpur-kheri
Barfi ... for all those who have not heard about Charlie Chapman. - Michael - Dehra Dun
Good movie. Sweet love story. Fantastic acting by Ranbir Kapoor and PC. Illeyana acted well too. Paisa vasool movie. Thumbs up. - Swati - Bangalore
It was copy of notebook... Seriously when India will learn to make there own story? Other than copy of famouse notebook.... Great acting by RK and Pc. I am glad they changed a bit however the way the chracter was laied the story could have had its own story line than now barfi have the title of copy of notebook. Acting - 5/5 Storyline - 0/5 - Fire - London
Story was pretty simple, acted fabulously by main actors. I felt Priyanka as always has shown her talent. Role she acted for was really a tough one, I would say more tough than the one played by Ranbir. Story flow back and fourth with Pritam's music direction is too good. Overall a sweet story with a lesson to be happy with watever we have rather than going for materialistic happiness - Popesirepoe - India
BARFI..!!Good as a play,Bad as a movie.. Playsake : acting is very good, Moviesake : dude u need more thn just acting to make a movie good..They say the movie had a beautiful msg...zindgi ki choti choti cheezon mein khusiyun n all blah blah...tell me guys...A deaf n dumb guy 1stly proposes a beautiful well educated rich girl..aur jab woh nahi pat-tii tuo he settles for this autistic girl who has enough money to last a lifetime...woohh....so where was he looking for choti khusiyun...bada haath maraa usne so that he cd live happily on somebody ele's wealth.. - shanu jagetiya - bangalore
Awsome movie, very good acting by every single artist. I hope that this movie does very good business, so that other filmmakers also find courage to make such kind of movies. That being said, let us not divide oursleves on the basis of cinema atleast. There have been many great movies made in south india, for instance Nayakan starring Kamal Hassan which is by far considered the best work in any language of Indian cinema. - Abhinav Mishra - Chennai
excellent movie!!!full of innocence which is rarely to be found now-a-days. terrific job done by ranbir and priyanka.effortless yet beautiful!! - preeti - delhi
95% Indian movies are worst, irrespective of southindian or bollywood. Simply directors, actors and other employees of film industry doing their business for earning money. How do they will get new concepts daily? Thus they mixed the concepts from different movies and serving us the useless things for their earning and we fool people think that cinema is the only entertainment. - prakash - kolkata
@urvashi I personally feel south indian cinemas are genuine and mostly first of its nature. it would be better if u try watching some of the legendary movies from south india. there are more remakes in b-wood. watch before u post. - krithika - coimbatore
