New York: Channing Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh have announced that they will bring the male stripper movie ‘Magic Mike’ to the stage.According to Deadline.com, the duo is producing a musical adaptation of the film, which focuses on a male stripper with a heart of gold, and features copious scenes of gyrating beefcake to match, and is expected to hit Broadway by summer 2013, the New York Post reported.
WME theater agents are packaging the show and Soderbergh and Tatum will produce it with Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler and Reid Carolin.
Carolin told USA Today that the live show will be, “More of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story. I’m almost more excited about that than the movie because I think it’s the perfect thing for women to go see on Broadway, to be participants in the show.”
The film, which is partially based on Tatum’s time as a male dancer in Tampa, Florida, when he was 19, also stars Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn, Alex Pettyfer and Joe Manganiello.
“If the girls... rip Matthew McConaughey’s thong off [in the movie], I don’t know what the Broadway audience would do... you’d have to have understudies for all of us because we’d have claw marks,” Manganiello said.
There is no word over whether any of the film’s cast would appear in the stage show. But ladies are sure to be planning their bachelorette parties around the show.
The announcement follows a spate of Broadway shows that have been based on films, including ‘Ghost The Musical,’ ‘Newsies,’ ‘Once’ and ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.’
