Mumbai: Sports movies have been known to not do too well at the Box Office. But lately that trend has changed.
The latest sports biopic starring Priyanka Chopra, 'Mary Kom'. has reportedly collected over Rs eight crore on its opening day.
"The film has made Rs.8 crore plus on its opening day," a source from the movie's co-producers Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said. Before the release of the movie on 1800 screens in India, it was preceded by a world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie which has directed by first time director Omung Kumar and co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has got mixed reviews from critics and anticipations from the movie are high.
"'Mary Kom' has delivered a strong opening day and set a new first day benchmark for heroine-centric films. The word of mouth is positive and Priyanka's standout performance has touched a chord with audiences across sections," Ajit Andhare, chief operating officer, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said in a statement.
The film producers seem to be confident that the film will be able to do well at the BO.
