Russell Crowe starrer `Noah` tops weekend box office with $44M earnings

Washington: Russell Crowe starrer biblical blockbuster `Noah` had topped the weekend box office by earning 44 million dollars.The film, which is directed by Darren Aronofsky, beat ` Divergent`, pushing it to the second position with 25.3 million dollars, followed by Disney`s ` Muppets Most Wanted` with 11.4 million dollars.

` Noah`, which has an environmental component, had come under fire from Christian groups for deviating too drastically from the Old Testament story.
