Goan band to perform at Amersfoort Jazz Festival

Panaji: A contingent of Konkani musicians and singers will be participating in the Amersfoort Jazz Festival scheduled to be held at Netherlands from May 13 onwards.

Armando Gonsalves, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Heritage Jazz, an organisation that has sponsored these musicians, said, this is for the first ever time that Konkani music will be played in the festival in Europe.

"Till now, Konkani music is being played amongst the Goan diaspora and the functions organised by them," Gonsalves said.

The Goan jazz band will comprise musicians-- the Monsorate Brothers and eight other members including musician Siddhanath Buyao, singer Veeam Braganza and Konkani pop star Olavo Rodrigues. The event is also supported by Goa Tourism department.

Mumbai-based Monsorate brothers have a record of assisting legends like R D Burman and even recently played with Bollywood singers like Himesh Reshammiya, he said.

Gonsalves said Konkani music lovers from Kuwait, Germany, India, Dubai and London are expected to arrive to listen to the music at the Jazz festival.

"The people in Amersfoot simply love Goan music," he said. Gonsalves said a cooperation treaty for an international jazz festival alliance will be signed between Goa and the organisers of Amersfoort Jazz Festival, during the event.

"The move is expected to see an exponential increase in the number of top jazz bands wanting to perform in Goa, thus making the state, a major attraction for national and foreign jazz lovers," he claimed.

Veeam, a Konkani singer, who will be participating in the festival, said the event will take Konkani music to a different level.

"We are introducing Konkani Jazz to the international audience," she said.

Veeam will be performing late Chris Perry`s songs, which were a hit in Goa in late 70s.
