London: Nicki Minaj, who was the first woman to have seven singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at the same time, has revealed that she only knew she’d really made it when Madonna puckered up for a smooch.
The 29-year-old musician, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, was given a 29th birthday present to remember by the Queen of Pop last December.
Britney Spears was the last star to receive the same treatment from the veteran singer, at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.
“You know if you get kissed by Madonna you get sanctified,” the Sun quoted her as saying.
“She went in for a kiss. No, it wasn’t a tongue, it was just a kiss, but she did it,” Minaj said.
The pair locked lips after they finished shooting the video for Madonna’s single ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’’, which features Nicki as well as British rapper M.I.A.
The 53-year-old sang Happy Birthday to her, presented her with a cake then told her to make a wish. As Madge went in for the snog, she told Nicki “And now your wish is coming true.”
“I had no idea it was going to happen, but Madonna is a bad-ass — she’s the ultimate bad-ass. She has very soft lips, though,” Minaj said.
Madonna hand-picked Nicki and M.I.A. to perform with her during half-time at the Super Bowl in February, which was watched by more than 100million viewers across the world.
They had back-to-back rehearsals leading up to the event because Madonna was determined to make it an unforgettable performance.
Nicki says: “We had a lot of rehearsals — intense rehearsals. It wasn’t like she was standing there with a whip but you knew it was going to be her biggest show so I understand she was nervous.”
The 53-year-old isn’t the only “Queen” Nicki is a fan of, she’s got a soft spot for Elizabeth II too.
“The Queen kind of seems like a fairytale character to me.
“I bet her closet is crazy, I’d love to go through it. I bet the dresses would fit me too — she’s like a little, tiny ladybug.”
The pink frocks would surely be the first she would grab as she is obsessed with the colour, something that stems from her childhood.
“When I was younger I didn’t have much financially, like we couldn’t afford a lot of stuff and I remember seeing little girls’ rooms on TV and they’d all be pink.
“I didn’t have my own room, I shared with my brother, so I would have this daydream and imagine that one day I could have my own room and it would all be pink, like Cinderella’s.
“So I guess pink takes me back to that time and it just feels euphoric when I wear it. I love it,” she added.
