The film directed by débutante director Divya Kumar Khosla saw a bunch of fresh faces onscreen after a long time. `Yaariyan` starred newcomer Himansh Kohli and Rakul Preet Singh in lead roles. The romantic young drama was made in a tight budget of Rs 11 crore and managed to mint a whopping Rs 40 crore at the box office.
Jai Ho (Released on January 24)
The much-awaited release of the year `Jai Ho` starring the biggest star of Hindi cinema Salman Khan managed to create enough stir before its release but fell short of the expectations it had generated. Starring newcomer Daisy Shah opposite Salman, the film was helmed by younger brother Sohail Khan and co-produced by Sunil Lulla. However, despite being a semi-hit, the film did manage to recover its cost of production. It was made in a budget of Rs 75 crore and made a not-so-bad Rs Rs. 102.58 crore at the box office.
Hasee Toh Phasee ( Released on February 7)
The romantic comedy-drama directed by Vinil Mathew and produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap starred Parineeti Chopra and `SOTY` actor Sidharth Malhotra in the lead. The film stood out for Parineeti`s perfect comic timing and quirky representation of her `scientist` character. The film was made in Rs 250 crore and generated around Rs 374 crore at the box office.
Gunday (Released on February 14)
This action-crime thriller having the city of Kolkata as its backdrop was received well across India. Ali Abbas Zafar had written and directed this action packed script starring the macho Ranveer Singh and oh-so hot Arjun Kapoor opposite Priyanka Chopra in an interesting pairing. The film made in a budget of Rs 50 crore earned Rs 78.6 crore in India and Rs 123.44 worldwide.
Highway (Released on February 21)
Imtiaz Ali`s one more cinematic treat for the audience—`Highway` saw newbie Alia Bhatt in a never-seen before avatar—this time actually proving to her critics that she `can` act. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, `Highway` was appreciated by the masses as well as the classed alike. The film was made in a budget of Rs 300 crore and minted Rs 285 crore at the box office, still declared a lot all across.
Queen (Released on March 7)
Director Vikas Bahl`s `Queen` indeed proved to be Kangana Ranaut`s best works so far. This new coming-of-age drama not only clicked with the younger generation instantly, it even made the parents sit and take note of this new `honeymoon-before-marriage` concept followed by the bride (Kangana) in the film. The film was made in a decent budget of Rs 12.5 crore and has grossed around Rs 59 crore so far, with `Queen` still scoring over other big hits.
Ragini MMS 2 (Released on March 21)
This new horrex (Horror plus sex) thriller directed by Bhushan Patel starring adult star-turned- Bollywood actress Sunny Leone saw many jaw dropping moments leaving the audiences asking for more. The `Baby Doll` song became sensational the day it hit YouTube with record breaking clicks for Sunny. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under Balaji Motion Pictures and ALT Entertainment, the film was made in the budget of Rs 18 crore and fetched around Rs 50 crore in India so far.
