Directed by Mrinal Sen and released in 1976, `Mrigaya` is a National Award winning film. Mithun, who made his debut in the film, went on to win the National Award for Best Actor. The film is about the equation between the British officers and Indian villagers in the 1920s. Mithun plays an expert archer who befriends a Britisher with a passion for game hunting.
`Disco Dancer`, the 1982 blockbuster gave Mithun the tag of ‘Disco Dancer`. This flick unfolds the rags-to-riches story of Jimmy, who was a street dancer as a child. Mithun’s unique pelvic moves became a huge hit and he went on to become the “king of Disco” post the release of the film.
Released on February 16 1990, `Agneepath` starring Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun was a blockbuster film. Mithun played Krishnan Iyer MA, a coconut water seller who saves Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Amitabh) from the Dons. The iconic character of Krishnan Iyer MA was inspired by Mithun’s room-mate during his struggling period. The Bengali babu won the Filmfare Best Supporting Award for this film.
Tahader Katha is a Bengali film released in 1992. Directed by Dipankar Dey, the film won the National Award for Best Feature Film. Mithun played Shibnath, a freedom fighter in the independence movement during the British times. He won the National Award for Best Actor for the film.
Mithun played Bhola Nath, a pimp in the 1993 super hit film. The film gained popularity because of a song with raunchy lyrics ‘Ghutur Ghutur’. Aayesha Jhulka played Mithun’s love interest in the flick.
The 1995 super hit film ‘Jallad’ portrayed Mithun as a ruthless character Amavas, who overpowers his mentor KK (Kader Khan) in politics. He is initially shown as a dutiful servant to KK but as he is given the charge to lead a political party on behalf of his master, he shows his true colour. Mithun grabbed the Filmfare Best Villain Award for this film.
Directed by Kalpana Lajmi, ‘Chingari’ had Sushmita Sen playing a prostitute who becomes a victim of Bhuvan Panda, a priest, played by Mithun. The veteran actor played a villainous role that was by far one of his best negative performances. However, the film was a dud at the Box Office.
Mithun plays Manik Dasgupta, a publisher of a newspaper named Swatantra, who treats Gurukant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) as his son. Guru considers him his father for giving him the much needed support to settle down in Bombay (Mumbai). But when Manik realises that Guru is making money by illegal means, he decides to expose him by asking his reporter (played by Madhavan) to write about his wrong doings.
`Luck` was a multistarrer film with Bollywood kid Imran Khan playing one of the protagonists in the film. Mithun plays a Major Jawan Pratap Singh, who had fought many a battles but was lucky enough to escape bullets. Owing to adverse circumstances, he becomes cash trapped and is in need of money to save his wife Sheela, played by Rupa Ganguly.
`Golmaal 3` revamped retro songs featured on Mithun in the 1980s. Mithun plays Pritam, father of three useless sons. He is a school bus driver who is often troubled by neighbours and money lenders who have lent money to his jobless sons. He meets with his ladylove, Geeta (played by Ratna Pathak Shah) after ages and decides to tie the knot with her at a ripe age. The film was garnered well at the Box Office.
