London: Katie Holmes has tried to stop her divorce from Tom Cruise turning into a public battle – by telling him that 6-year-old daughter Suri must be a priority for them both.
The 33-year-old spoke to Tom for the first time since their split after he wished Suri good night.
According to a friend she told the actor: “Let’s just try and get through this for the sake of Suri,” a leading daily has reported.
“It’s not about us – she has to be our priority,” she said.
According to a source, the conversation between the estranged couple was brief and civil.
“It was brief and very civil. Both appreciate that things can’t descend into all-out war,” the source said.
“They are trying to be adult about things not least because there are children to think about. Tom and Suri have talked several times since the split so it was only a matter of time before Katie spoke to Tom herself,” the source said.
It’s believed that the 50-year-old actor spoke to Katie on a phone belonging to one of her assistants.
“It’s not ideal but as long as Tom gets to speak to Suri he doesn’t care,” the source said.
“It breaks his heart to have to speak to her on the phone – and not face to face – but hopefully that will change soon,” the source added.
The ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star filed for divorce in New York, on Friday, as the courts there look more favourably on sole custody than in California.
