The 4-year-old female panda was struggling to stay afloat after it accidentally fell into the water at Wolong National Natural Reserve in Southwest China's Sichuan province.

New Delhi: In a dramatic rescue, a giant panda was saved from drowning in a huge dam in southwest China.

The 4-year-old female panda, who before being rescued, was struggling to stay afloat after it accidentally fell into the water at Wolong National Natural Reserve in Southwest China's Sichuan province.

It is believed that the rare creature got lost before stepping into a power station in the reserve area and falling into the water in the afternoon, Chinese media reported.

To rescue the panda, emergency workers used an anesthetic rifle to tranquilize the animal and then hauled it onto the shore. 

China Xinhua News tweeted out the following video showing the giant panda, who's believed to have wandered into the dam accidentally, being pulled back to the shore by the rescue team.

The panda was found to be unharmed and was allowed to return to its natural habitat.
