New Delhi: Five Russian scientists have been reportedly trapped by a group of adult polar bears on an Arctic island.

Vassiliy Shevchenko, the head of the Sevgidromet State Monitoring Network that owns the station, told the Russian news agency TASS on Tuesday, that the scientists who are currently besieged by polar bears at a weather station on the Troynoy island in the Kara Sea will be sent dogs for protection and flares via the Mikhail Somov expedition vessel.

Around 10 adult polar bears and some cubs have been encircling the scientists for nearly two weeks.

“As of Saturday, a female bear has practically been sleeping under the Arctic station’s windows,”

According to Vadim Plotnikov, head of the expedition, as of Saturday, a female bear has practically been sleeping under the Arctic station’s windows, adding that at least four bears are visible from the base at any given time.

Polar bears are registered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Red Book of Russia as an endangered species.
