Incredible fact just discovered: Dolphins are mouth-breathers!

New Delhi: Dolphins are marine creatures that the entire world is fond of. They're awfully cute and considered one of the most best behaved marine animals.

They have many unique nuances and their lovable nature is what makes them unique. However, a recently published report has stated a very interesting fact about the adorable mammal.

This is a fact that would intrigue many conservationists and environmentalists – Dolphins inhale from their mouth and not their blowhole, which exists on top of their heads!

The blowhole has always been considered a dolphin's 'nose', since it ousts old air and fills their lungs with new air when they surface.

The team of researchers from the University of Otago confirmed this report saying that a dolphin spotted at the coast of New Zealand was discovered breathing through its mouth.

As per The Tecake, the scientists wrote, this mammal continually surfaced at a sharp edge to the ocean, its head blasting higher than ordinary over the surface of the water. Its blowhole, which ought to have opened wide, stayed close. In the meantime, nose swelling with taking in the air was clearly audible as the dolphin opened its mouth.

However, the researchers are yet to find the reason behind the dolphin breathing this way. The possibilities include damaged muscles or the obstruction by a distant object. But, no clear justifications have been made.
