Ottawa: There's a reason why Lions are considered kings of the jungle. They're ferocious, violent, dangerous and their unexpected and unpredictable ways of carrying out attacks have always stumped experts.

There have been many viral videos and stories involving lions of late, a couple of them being attacks due to provocation, where the lions had to be killed.

Now, according to reports, a zoo worker at the Granby Zoo in Montreal, Canada, has been seriously injured and hospitalized, after a being mauled by a lion.

The attack took place on Monday in the lion's enclosure during routine maintenance. The lion's den houses two males and a female lion.

The lion was driven off after another worker sprayed the animal with a high-pressure water hose and CO2 gas, which the zoo said is standard procedure when an attack occurs.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, has suffered injuries to her lower body and a cervical fracture. She was transported to a hospital and in stable condition.

An investigation by the Health and Work Safety Commission was under way.

All three lions have been isolated after the attack and made unavailable for public viewing.
