Katrina Kaif—the undisputed Rs 100 crore queen!
“Beauty in the flesh will continue to rule the world” — Florenz Ziegfeld
Katrina Kaif, the damsel who initially was in distress, does not fall in that category any more. However, there was a time when she was a Miss 'Nobody'. Starting her illustrious career with 'Boom' opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan and several senior artistes, she didn't set the Box Office on fire (as was expected from the multi-starrer). In fact, the leggy lass was written off as 'plastic' and 'stone-faced'.
From getting these unpleasant monikers to gracing the headlines with new-found love words such as 'Barbie Doll' and 'Chikni Chameli', the girl has travelled many miles. Her first experience of facing the arc-lights may not have been an ideal one, as she herself accepted in one of her interviews (many years later) that 'Boom' was a big mistake. But she strived hard, worked on her Hindi speaking skills, and today we have her as one of the most riveted actresses, who delivers Rs 100 crore films at quite an unpredictable Box Office.
The self-driven actress, who is best described as a “working machine”, by some of her best co-stars, has indeed had her share of bloopers as well as blockbusters. Though there is no intention to dig any deeper into her personal life, but allegedly she got hold of a certain Mr Salman Khan to make her place in the industry. And yes, certainly we will touch upon the aspects which worked wonders for her in minting moolah.
Katrina got associated with the Rs 100 crore club a long way back. Kat (as we fondly call her) has a line of hits to her credit, which touched upon this golden number, after her career actually kick-started. She was able to strike a chord with the audiences in 'Namastey London' (2007) - one of the highlights of the movie was Katrina speaking in Hindi for the very first time. She didn't get her voice dubbed, and the result was a smashing Rs 70 crore plus business over all.
After that, like they say, there was no looking back for Katrina. She had arrived, and how! Her on-screen pairing with Akshay Kumar became a sure-shot mantra to make a film superhit. After a spate of unsuccessful films and bad choices, Katrina became the 'poster girl' of Hindi films. If we map her growth, four releases have really helped her get into the number-game. 'Ek Tha Tiger', 'Jab Tak Hain Jaan', 'Dhoom:3' and now the latest one 'Bang Bang'—all have done stupendous business at the collection window and effortlessly entered the Rs 100 crore club.
In 'Ek Tha Tiger', she sizzled with her former boyfriend Salman Khan and this proved to be the USP of the movie. The film made Rs 319 crore worldwide, making it the highest grosser of that year. Katrina's next biggie came with Sallu's arch-rival Shah Rukh Khan. She can boast of being directed by the veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra in 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' (2012), which sadly proved to be his last venture. The film made around Rs 200 crore worldwide.
By 2013, her stardom had increased by leaps and bounds—the actress had reached the number one spot. Followed by these two big hits, came in the other two smash hits, ' Dhoom:3', opposite Aamir Khan (she actually has worked with the Khan trilogy, and quiet peacefully). 'Dhoom:3' broke all records, and collected a massive Rs 500 crore worldwide. Although it was touted as Aamir's film, Kat made sure her trapeze act in 'Kamli' song garnered more attention than the lead actor's dialogue delivery.
And yet again, she has literally banged it at the Box Office, with her latest addition 'Bang Bang'. The suave actress's film is the fastest to enter the Rs 100 crore club – a mere five days post its release. 'Bang Bang' opposite Hrithik Roshan has fetched around Rs 300 crore so far, counting the worldwide collections. While we have the figures to measure her success, she has the Rs 100 crore plus amount in her kitty.
Katrina Kaif—you have certainly risen and your hard work has indeed paid you well (quite literally, we say). For the moment, have a dip in your success pool, and swim ahead of your contemporaries—standing tall at the altar, and scream loudly, “What's my name, what's my name?” Not 'Sheila', but Katrina!
