Chandigarh: On August 28, a special CBI court, pronouncing a verdict in a 15-year-old rape case, sentenced Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 20 years in jail. 

After the court pronounced the sentence, Gurmeet Ram Rahim pleaded the judge for mercy with folded hands and even broke down into tears.

Here's we take a look at what all happened inside the special makeshift CBI court inside the Sunaria jail in Rohtak: 

The court began its proceedings at around 2:30 pm and special CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh allotted 10 minutes each to both sides (prosecution and defense) to put forward their arguments.

The prosecution, CBI demanded maximum sentence for Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 15-year-old rape case, in which he was convicted by the court of raping two sadhivs inside the Dera.

The defense, however, argued that the Dera chief is a social worker, who has worked for the welfare of people and asked the judge to take a lenient view and give him minimum sentence. 

Altogether nine people including rape convict self-styled godman Ram Rahim Singh was present in the makeshift courtroom.

As CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh started reading the verdict in the rape case, he called for a complete silence in the courtroom. Following this, Ram Rahim asks for a mercy from the judge with his folded hands. "Forgive me, please", he said while asking for mercy from the judge. 

The CBI special court judge Jagdeep Singh sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 10 years in jail for rape.

Soon after the sentence was announced, Ram Rahim broke out in tears and sat on the floor with his hands on his head inside the courtroom. As he refused to accompany the cops escorting him for medical checkups and further formalities, he was forcefully dragged out of the courtroom. 

Ram Rahim was also fined with Rs 50,000, 10,000 and 5,000 for three different cases.

In tears, rape convict 'godman' complaint of severe uneasiness after which ambulances were rushed inside the jail premises and medical check-ups were conducted on the Dera chief. 

After the medical checkup, Ram Rahim was forcefully taken inside Rohtak jail premises. 

CBI court judge's issued strict instructions to jail authorities to not provide any special facility to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh since he is a rape convict and as per manual, should be treated as an ordinary prisoner. 

After the sentence pronouncement, Ram Rahim's lawyer announced to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court for relief against the CBI special court's order.

Meanwhile, Rohtak has been turned into a fortress by paramilitary forces and the Haryana Police. The Army has been kept on standby. Extra forces deployed outside the court, media persons also asked to be on standby.
