New Delhi: Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways, causing difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing.

Though the disease cannot be cured, but there are certain things which one can do to relieve the symptoms and prevent the occurrence of severe asthma attacks.

Here are some things which you can do to prevent asthma attacks:

Dust

Because of its allergy-inducing properties, dust causes havoc for asthmatics. So, it is very important that one maintains a very high levels of hygiene and rooms should be kept dust-free.

Pollens

One should avoid pollen from flowers as it is trigger for asthma attacks. It is said that growing plants indoors can also be dangerous as they are a source of mold, which acts as a trigger for asthma.

Take regular medications

To prevent asthma attack, one should take control medications every day as they help to maintain the normal diameter of the airways and control airway inflammation.

Quit smoking

Smoking not only increases the chance of getting asthma but also worsens the symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. So, one should quit smoking to prevent themselves from severe asthma attack.

Exercise

Many people are not aware that exercising can also trigger an asthmatic attack. Exercise-induced asthma is a type of asthma triggered by vigorous or prolonged exercise or physical exertion.

World Asthma Day is marked on the first Tuesday of May, every year. This year`s theme, `You can control your asthma`, highlights the perilous nature of the disease and how it can be effectively be managed.
