Ajmal fail to address campaign; police fire in air

Gossaigaon: Police fired in the
air Saturday to disperse agitated people after All India United
Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal could not
address a campaign rally when his helicopter could not land in
Gossaigaon in Assam`s Kokrajhar district, police said.

Ajmal was scheduled to address a meeting at Telipara
under Gossaigaon sub-division this afternoon but his
helicopter could not land due to technical problem.
The people, who were waiting for several hours, became
agitated at this and began pelting stones, damaging the stage
and several vehicles, including a fire engine.

The police then fired in the air to disperse the crowd
but there was no report of any injury, the sources said.

Senior police and civil officials rushed to the spot
and brought the situation under control, sources added.

> In another incident, one person was killed and three
others seriously injured when the vehicle in which they were
traveling to a Congress rally at Laharighat in Morigaon
district fell into a ditch, police said.

The driver of the speeding vehicle lost control and it
fell into a nearby ditch killing one person on the spot and
injuring three others critically.

The injured were shifted to Guwahati Medical College
