New Delhi: Akhil Kumar gave a resounding start to India`s boxing campaign in the Arafura Games, advancing to the quarterfinals with a thumping win in the opening round of the event in Darwin, Australia on Monday.

Akhil, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist from the 2006 edition in Melbourne, beat Marescot Michael 21-6.
The 29-year-old took a 7-0 lead before his rival tried to stage a fightback but the Indian was so dominant that he ensured that the scoreline showed the difference.

"I used the uppercuts for most of my scoring. The bout was pretty easy in the end and I am glad to win," Akhil said after the bout.
Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist Vijender Singh will make his debut in the light heavyweight (81kg) category, while Ajay Kumar (75kg) will also open his campaign.
