All eyes on amateur Tom Lewis on second day

Sandwich: Amateur Tom Lewis will return to Royal St George`s on Friday morning hoping to continue the fairytale start to his first British Open after he ended day one sharing the five-under-par lead with Dane Thomas Bjorn.

Lewis, 20, strung together a run of four consecutive birdies from the 14th in his round of 65 to cap a day that had already been made special by him playing with five-times champion Tom Watson, whom he was named after. Lewis, whose face will be on the front and back pages of most newspapers when he takes an early breakfast, tees off at 9:31 a.m. British time when he will be guaranteed a huge gallery intrigued to see if the 500-1 shot can continue his run.Bjorn, a late entry to the tournament having been sixth reserve initially, goes off at 1126 hoping to build on his impressive start at the course where he blew his best chance of winning a major back in 2003. Three players are a shot behind on four under -- Miguel Angel Jimenez, Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson -- with a dozen lurking a further two back on two-under.In contrast to Thursday, when conditions calmed after a blustery start, those going out first on Friday will get the best of the weather, with winds forecast to freshen during the day ahead of a wet and windy weekend.
