Bollywood’s average fare at National Awards

Mumbai: Tamil actor Prakash Raj has left behind Bollywood biggies like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan to claim the prestigious National Awards for 2007 in Best Actor category for his scintillating performance in ‘Kanchivaram’.

The film ‘Kanchivaram’ has also been declared as the Best Film for 2007. Directed by Priyadarshan, it revolves around the lives and times of silk-weavers of Kancheepuram in British India. Kannada actress Umashree has won the Best Actress award for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli`s ‘Gulabi Talkies’.

While Bollywood entries - ‘Gandhi My Father’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’, and ‘Chak De India’ managed to win other awards. ‘Gandhi My Father’ received three awards in special jury award for Best Film category, Feroz Abbas won it for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor award was given to Darshan Zariwala.

Bhavna Talwar`s directorial debut `Dharm` that explored religious undercurrents has won best film for national integration award.

Shah Rukh and Aamir managed to get something with ‘Chak De’ winning in the wholesome entertainment category while ‘Taare Zameen Par’ in the family welfare category. Playback singer Shankar Mahadevan has won the award for the song ‘Meri Maa’ from the film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. Lyricist Prasoon Joshi has also won in Best Lyrics category for TZP.

Master filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan won the Best Director award for the seventh time for his ‘Naalu Pennungal’.

The jury was headed by Sai Paranjpe; other members included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. About 102 films and 106 non-feature films were considered for the prestigious National Awards.

Talking about Prakash Raj’s win over SRK and Aamir, filmmaker Priyadarshan said, “It was expected. I was very sure Prakash Raj will get it. I am happy about my film ‘Kanchivaram’ getting the award, I am a commercial filmmaker and my off-beat film getting accolades comes as a surprise.”
