Chirag beat Salgaocar 2-1 in I-League

Margao: Chirag United defeated a fighting Salgaocar 2-1 in the 17th round of the I-League at the Nehru

Stadium here today. Chirag United, who led 2-0 at half time scored through Josimar Da Silva Martins (13th minute) and Ashim Biswas (44th). Salgaocar, however, fought back in the second half and reduced the margin through substitute Beevan D`Mello (57th). Salgaocar failed to display the same fighting spirit which they showed against Dempo. The Goan side`s defence looked ineffective in Luciano Sabrosa`s absence as they allowed lot of space to the rival strikers, which resulted in two goals in the first half. Chirag United took the lead in the 13th minute through a penalty after Joshimar Da Silva was brought down inside the box by Milagres Gonsalves. Ashim, who missed a couple of scoring chances, then doubled the lead a minute before the break. Salgaocar brought in fresh legs in Lestor Fernandes and D`Mello in place of injured Rino Anto and Keita Mandjou in the second half, and their move yielded result soon. D`Mello reduced the margin in the 57th minute heading home a Rocus Lamare corner. PTI
