Colombo: The first-ever International Wheelchair Tennis tournament will be held here from July
16-18. Among others, players from India, Malaysia and hosts Sri Lanka have confirmed their participation in the three-day event. Sri Lanka will be represented in the tournament by its top ranked player Upali Rajakaruna and D M Gamini. "The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) is delighted to be hosting the first Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Sri Lanka and is particularly proud that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) endorsed SSC as a suitable venue," SSC said in a statement. "This is being done particularly to uplift the great game of tennis and to lend support to the differently able people involved in the game," the release added. Incidentally, the tournament will also mark tennis` debut on clay courts in Sri Lanka. PTI
