Nigeria: Young Everton striker Victor Anichebe is hopeful of making the Nigeria squad for the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

The 22 year-old striker, who has already got four caps for the Super Eagles, has recently returned from a serious knee injury which saw him sidelined for almost a year.

Anichebe has impressed in his recent club performances since his return, scoring two goals in nine appearances.

Speaking to EvertonTV, Anichebe said he hoped to have impressed new Nigeria boss Lars Lagerback enough to warrant a place in the squad.

"It would be a great feeling, but everybody keeps asking me about the World Cup, but I didn`t participate in any of the qualifiers," he said.

"Obviously the manager needs to look at everyone and see who`s fit, who`s played a lot of games, who`s in good form. We`ll see at the end of the season."

Anichebe, who is yet to score for his national side, is aware of the competition for places in an attacking team, not least from his Everton team-mate Yakubu.

"We`ve got great players such as Yak and Obafemi Martins, but we`ll see what happens" he said.

Aside from his World Cup aspirations, Anichebe also hopes to stay fit and is looking forward to a much improved Premier League campaign with Everton next season.

"We`re just hoping to end the season on a high really - whatever happens, happens. We`ve had a tough season with a lot of injuries and we`re finishing the season strong.

"We`ll look forward to next season wherever we are," he said.
