Ferrer wins one-sided Heineken Open

Auckland: Spanish top seed David Ferrer raced to a lopsided victory in the Heineken Open final in Auckland on Saturday, beating sixth seed David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-3, 6-2.

The 28-year-old Ferrer, ranked seventh in the world, took just 68 minutes to secure his 10th career title. The match was expected to be much closer, with former Wimbledon finalist Nalbandian, currently ranked 27, not having lost a set in the tournament before the final. But once he dropped his serve at 3-4 in the first set against the Spaniard he never recovered. Ferrer took the set with an ace in the next game, and then broke Nalbandian twice in the second set, including a love game, to go 5-2 up, before easily holding his own serve for the match. Despite the one-sided nature of the final, Ferrer was quick to highlight the way Nalbandian, 29, had played earlier in the week. "I would like to congratulate David for this week because he was injured for a lot of time last year. I think he`s coming into the top 10 soon," Ferrer said.It was the second time Ferrer has won in Auckland, having previously beaten Tommy Robredo in the 2007 final. Bureau Report
