Pune: Gurinder Singh starred in India`s thrilling 3-2 win over Belgium as the hosts reached the semifinal of the FIVB Men`s Junior World Championship (U-21) volleyball tournament.
In a must-win Pool E match, the Indian spikers bounced back from a game down to beat Belgium in a hard-fought battle that lasted more than two hours.
Having finished second in Pool E, India set up a semifinal clash with Pool F winner Brazil.
Gurinder was India`s ace spiker by scoring 26 points out of 67 attempts followed by Naveen Raja Jacob who scored 20 points.
For Belgium, Kevin Klinkenberg contributed 21 points, while Pieter Verhees and Sam Deroo chalked up 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Belgium won nearly every statistical category with slim margins of 60-59 in spikes, 14-11 in blocks and even at 3-all in aces. However, India took advantage of 32 Belgium errors and made only 19 of its own to make up the difference.
"The boys played an excellent game. They were calm, composed and confident. In-fact I was nervous today. In comparison to the facilities that foreign teams have we are nowhere close but we have come a long way even with our desi style of coaching," India coach Kumara said.
"I am confident that the boys will play even better in the coming games and all credit goes to them," he added.
