Kolkata Dec 04: Lt Gen K S Jamwal, who took over the
charge of GoC-in-C Eastern Command on Monday, on Thursday laid
wreaths at the Vijay Smarak Memorial here and reviewed a guard
of honour on his new appointment.
Jamwal, who was GoC-in-C of the Army Training Command
before taking over charge of the Eastern Command, had also
served as Additional Director General Staff duties at the army
headquarters and had made significant contributions to the U N
peace keeping operations and foreign training teams of the
Indian Army, defence sources said.
Winner of the Vishist Seva Medal, the Ati Vishist Seva
Medal and the 'Force Commander's Commendation Certificate' for
outstanding service, Jamwal served at the U N Mission in
Angola for two years as Chief of Staff and Regional Commander
(Southern Region) and Deputy Chief Military Observer.
A gunner and aviator, Jamwal commanded a brigade in the
semi-desert terrain and a rapid division in the desert during
'Operation Parakram' before taking over charge of the elite
desert corps in the Rajasthan and Gujarat sectors.
He had been a brigade major of a mountain brigade,
Colonel General Staff of a mountain division in the North East
and Brigadier General Staff (Operations) of headquarters
Northern Command during 'Operation Vijay' where he was closely
associated with overseeing operations during the Kargil war.
Jamwal had also been an instructor at the school of
artillery, Devlali and at the Defence Services Staff College,
Wellington, the sources said.
