Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shillong Lajong FC won their respective second round matches of the final phase of 2nd division I-League.
Shillong: Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shillong Lajong FC won their respective second round matches of the final phase of 2nd division I-League on Thursday.
In the first match of the day, Sporting pipped Southern Samity by one goal.
The lone goal of the match came in the 55th minute when Nilender Diwan taking a half volley shot of the cross ball of Suraj Mondal found the back of the net.
Later, Nilender was declared man of the match. Not much action was seen in the either of the goal mouths. Star striker of Black Panthers Chizuba Christopher was
also off colour.
Southern Samity had an opportunity to equalise the game in the 89th minute but unmarked Jamir Ali Mondal made a blunder by kicking it wide.
Referee Deepak Kumar Dey of Assam booked Han Wook, Kartick Kisku of Mohammedan Sporting and Debayan Saha of Southern Samity.
In the second match, a 22nd minute goal by James Gbilee helped last year relegated side Shillong Lajong snatch a victory by piping Ar-Hima by a solitary goal.
In a keenly contested match, Lajong opened its account in an aggressive mood attacking the rival goal mouth right from the beginning. In the 6th minute, James and Zenith Mashangva had combined well and made a dangerous move but failed to find the target.
In the 12 minute, Ar-Hima came close to the goal but Zico Zoremsanga was caught off side.
In the 22nd minute, James carried the ball from the central line into the 24yard arena and took a powerful shot which penetrated into the goal.
In the 76th minute, Ar-Hima’s Adebayo Adewusi had headed the ball home of a free kick taken by Restom Khriem and referee AR Sashikumar of Kerala had declared it, but the linesman raised the flag and the joy in the Ar-Hima camp was shattered as the referee had to withdraw his decision.
Ar-Hima adopted a long pass tactic rather than their short pass signature style and had mounted tremendous pressure in the rival goal mouth, leaving no option for Lajong than to play defencive in the last 20 minutes.
Zenith Mashangva of Lajong was declared man of the match.
On Friday, Sporting Club de Goa will meet Vasco and United Sikkim will take on Royal Wahingdoh.
