Nokia unveils low-end smartphones at MWC

Finnish firm Nokia today unveiled a range of low-end Windows smartphone at the Mobile World Congress.

Barcelona: To renew its dwindling market share in the smartphone market, Finnish firm Nokia today unveiled a range of low-end Windows smartphone at the Mobile World Congress.
The company has launched a low-end Lumia phone, three new phones designed for emerging markets and a new phone that has a 41-megapixel camera.

"One year ago, we shared that Nokia was embarking on a new journey to build great mobile devices. Today, with our fourth Lumia device...we are demonstrating that we can change the clock speed of Nokia," Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop said.

Faced with strong competition from Apple iPhone and Samsung smartphones, Nokia last year dumped its own smartphone software in favour of Microsoft Windows.

However, the strategy had little impact on sales as the price of Nokia smartphones was quite high.

As per IDC, Nokia sold 19.6 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2011, 31 per cent lower than the same quarter of 2010 when it shipped 28.1 million smart devices.

On the other hand, Apple reported more than two-fold growth in sales at 37 million units in Q4 2011, while runner- up Samsung reported an almost four-fold jump in sales with 36 million smartphones.

Other device, the Nokia 808 PureView has got a large, high-resolution 41-megapixel sensor, along with Carl Zeiss optics.

"People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell," Jo
Harlow Executive Vice President of Nokia Smart Devices said.

The Lumia 610 will be Nokia`s lowest-priced Windows Phone yet. Though details about launch dates is not available, the company said the likely retail price would be about 189 euros.

Besided, the company has expanded Lumia 900 to additional markets beyond the US.
