Probe into AMU irregularities evoke mixed response

Last Updated: Monday, July 27, 2009 - 19:08

Aligarh: Coming out strongly against the
Centre`s reported move to probe into charges of financial
irregularities at AMU, the university administration today
termed the action as "painful" and "unjustified", while the
AMU Teachers Association welcomed it.

Dismissing allegations against Vice Chancellor PK Abdul
Azis and other senior officials, as "baseless", a statement
issued by the varsity on his behalf has also warned that
inquiry would `lead to turmoil in the campus`.

On March 28, 2009, eight members of the University`s
Executive Council had met President Pratibha Patil and handed
over a memorandum to her on the financial health of the
varsity, as the President is a visitor to AMU.

Later, the Centre ordered to institute a time-bound
inquiry into the charges of financial mismanagement here and
the actions of the VC have come under scrutiny. This created
divisions between the teachers` group and the administration.

While, the administration wants the Centre to "roll
back the inquiry, since no central university has been brought
under such a probe," the AMU teachers association on the other
hand has welcomed it.
